When I first visited Whitecross National School, in Julianstown, I was immediately drawn to the bright. double height, entrance area. It felt like a blank canvas, just waiting for colour and imagination to bring it to life.

The River Nanny is the main inspiration behind ‘The Flow of Life’ artwork. The river has shaped and influenced the history, heritage, wildlife and communities of the local area.

I’ve enjoyed collaborating with Ceadogán Rugs, to transform the artwork, into tufted, wool, wall hangings. Each piece has been made with care and attention, to create beautiful, high-quality, handcrafted art.

The wall hangings are made from 100% wool and will help to soften the sound and scale of the space. The colours used are strong and vibrant and will bring a sense of fun and joy to the school interior.

The circular designs and the flow of the imagery, connect the upper and lower levels together, to bring creativity to the heart of the building.

When asked about the process of having an art commision created for the school, Principal Mr. Doran said

'Working with Breda on this art commission was a very rewarding and enjoyable experience for the whole school.  We had a list of ideas of what we thought might work but in reality no idea of what we could do to make the best use of this space in the school.

Breda took all of these ideas on board and when she came with her proposal we were all blown away by her design.  She talked us through each step of the process, provided us with updates on progress and gave us regular photos of it being created.

Breda also worked with our fifth classes to incorporate their ideas into the design.  This was lovely as all children could see the work involved but were also part of the creation.

The whole process of this art commission went extremely smoothly and was very efficient.  It was a real joy to see the whole project come together within a few months.  There was a real sense of suspense seeing the work installed in the school. '

Student Engagement

The 5th class students have been involved in the design and creation of their own wall hanging, which captures their creativity.

When reflecting on the student engagement, 5th class teacher Ms B. Duffy said

'This project gave the children a chance to develop new artistic skills in a hands-on and creative way. The students took such pride in creating something that will now be part of the school forever - it's been a wonderful journey. Thanks so much Breda for allowing us to be a part of it!'

Student feedback

'I am so glad that I got involved and it was so much fun. I'm so excited for the next 5th class to see it and every time we see it it will remind us of our time in 5th class.'

'It was really good. It was a relaxing process but I was able to learn as well. It is so nice to look at coming into school each day.'

'I really enjoyed learning how to punch needle. Breda was really nice, and the effort she put in for us was really good.'

Ms Hamill added, 'The project gave the class a brilliant learning opportunity. It allowed them to learn about the history of their local surroundings while also acquiring a new artistic skill. Seeing the final art piece was a full circle moment for the students and one, I'm sure, they will treasure forever. Thank you, Breda!'

‘The Flow of Life’ will hopefully provide a welcome embrace and be a source of inspiration and joy, for everyone at Whitecross National School.

The positive feedback from the teachers and students has been heartwarming.

'As you open the door of our school, light, colour and contrast welcome you warmly.  What was once a sterile, white, cold area has been transformed thanks to the wonderful artist Breda Marron.

Your attention is immediately grabbed as you look up at the images.  These vibrant warm engaging images all have a story to tell.  As we follow the river and the light, stories of our locality through the ages are brought to life in the most spectacular enjoyable and dramatic way.  The sense of movement is everywhere in the images and leads us to the highest final image of Newgrange.  The positioning of this image at our own highest light box feels truly apt.  As a result, we feel uplifted.

The magnificence of this installation can be appreciated from different approaches and different levels.  Each approach feels new and exciting.

This installation is breathtaking. History, Culture and Storytelling never felt this good and we stand transfixed!'
